Self Portrait

For much of my life I have been the object of the gaze and projections of others - first as a child actor/dancer, and later as a model. I am fascinated and disturbed by the chasm that lies between how others see us and how we see ourselves. Self Portrait is a personal diary of my ongoing search for a more authentic self and an exploration of how a persona is constructed and how it might be deconstructed and reassembled into a more fluid and flexible identity.
Memories of my mother, her girlfriends, and of my childhood dance teachers have inspired me to explore the notion of stereotypes and certain archetypes that I have internalized. Turning the camera onto myself, I am now in control of the gaze. As both subject and object, I challenge what it means to be seen.
